Harold and Maude Vintage on Lafayette Avenue is one of Bed-Stuy's best-kept secrets in the vintage world. Founded in 2013 by Mami Nagase and Ryoma Hashimoto, the shop has cultivated a loyal following through a buying philosophy that prioritizes wearability and quality over hype: vintage that has been selected because it is genuinely good, not because it is currently trending. The result is a floor that feels personal and considered — like browsing a particularly well-curated friend's closet rather than a commercial retail operation.
The selection spans baby through adult sizing, which makes Harold and Maude one of the few vintage shops in Brooklyn that functions equally well for parents shopping for kids and adults shopping for themselves. American vintage from the 1960s through the 1990s forms the core — denim, outerwear, knitwear, casual dresses — supplemented by Japanese vintage that reflects the owners' aesthetic influences and access to sourcing channels that most Brooklyn shops don't tap. Prices are honest and reflect the curation: expect to pay $25–$60 for most clothing, with higher prices on exceptional pieces and outerwear.
The shop is closed Tuesdays, open Monday noon to 7pm, and Wednesday through Sunday noon to 7pm. The G train to Classon Avenue or the C train to Franklin Avenue are both within reasonable walking distance. Lafayette Avenue itself has become one of the more interesting commercial streets in western Bed-Stuy, and Harold and Maude is a natural anchor for a neighborhood afternoon that extends well beyond the thrift visit.
