8207 3rd Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11209
Bay Ridge is one of Brooklyn's most geographically isolated neighborhoods — the southwestern corner of the borough, separated from the more thrift-dense North Brooklyn by significant subway travel time. That isolation has an upside: the thrift stores that do operate here see far less competition from the vintage-enthusiast crowd that packs Williamsburg and Greenpoint shops on weekends. The Housing Works location on Third Avenue is the neighborhood's most reliable secondhand destination, and for those willing to make the trip, it consistently delivers. Bay Ridge's established Arab-American and Italian-American communities are among the neighborhood's most consistent donors, and the items they bring in reflect multi-generational household histories: quality outerwear from an era when coats were made to last decades, formal and semi-formal clothing that has become genuinely vintage, and the occasional significant decorative object or household item. You don't find these donations in the same form anywhere else in Brooklyn because nowhere else has the same community mix. The quality of clothing is generally solid at this location. The surrounding population skews older than North Brooklyn, and older donors tend to bring in well-preserved pieces — clothing that's been stored properly, washed carefully, and maintained for years before being donated. A good wool coat or a vintage leather handbag from a Bay Ridge donor is often in significantly better condition than a comparable piece from a higher-turnover location. The Third Avenue location is accessible by the R train (Bay Ridge Avenue and 86th Street stops) and the B63 bus. The street has a mix of longtime neighborhood businesses and the unpretentious restaurants Bay Ridge has always been known for.
