Old Iron — also listed as New York Old Iron — is the most specialised secondhand stop in Gowanus: an architectural salvage warehouse on 9th Street dealing in the heavy parts of old buildings. As the name says, old iron is the core of it, including salvaged cast-iron bathtubs and sinks taken out of residential buildings. Mixed in among the big pieces are large quantities of vintage hardware, which is where renovators tend to lose an afternoon.
This is a shop for people restoring an older home rather than for browsing, and its hours reflect that: Tuesday through Friday 8am to 3:30pm, Saturday 8am to 1pm, closed Sunday and Monday. Go early, bring measurements, and plan how you will move what you buy. The Smith–9th Streets F/G station is a few minutes' walk away, and Big Reuse's Gowanus warehouse at 1 12th St is close enough to make a salvage double-header of the trip.
