Retrofret is a secondhand shop for a very particular kind of object: old and rare stringed instruments. The showroom on Luquer Street, at the western edge of Carroll Gardens, carries vintage acoustic and electric guitars, basses, amplifiers, banjos, mandolins, and the odd orchestral instrument, and it is open to the public for browsing rather than by appointment only.
Everything here is pre-owned, and much of it arrives on consignment — Retrofret buys and consigns vintage guitars, amps, banjos, mandolins, and basses, so it is as much a place to sell an instrument as to buy one. Prices are specialist-dealer prices, set for collectors and working musicians rather than for bargain hunters. The showroom is open Monday through Friday noon to 7pm and Saturday noon to 6pm, closed Sunday. Their repair bench has been at capacity, so check before bringing an instrument in for work. The Carroll Street F/G stop is roughly a fifteen-minute walk.
