Yesterday's News has been on Court Street since 2001, which in Carroll Gardens terms makes it an institution. Run by J.P. and Colleen Ferraioli, it is the neighborhood's genuine antiques-and-collectibles shop — the kind of densely packed, floor-to-ceiling operation where the stock changes constantly and no two visits turn up the same thing.
Furniture is the backbone. The selection ranges across Mid-Century Modern, 1960s Pop, Shabby Chic, and Industrial, and covers the pieces people actually need for a Brooklyn apartment: wardrobe closets and armoires for prewar bedrooms with no closet space, bookshelves, mirrors, lighting, couches, and chairs. Because Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill brownstones turn over their contents regularly, the sourcing is genuinely local and the quality runs well above what you would expect at the price.
Beyond furniture, the shop is a reliable dig for records, pottery and ceramics, pulp fiction paperbacks, and comic books. This is where Yesterday's News differs from the vintage clothing shops a few blocks east on Smith Street — it is an objects-and-furniture shop first, and the browsing rewards patience and a willingness to look under and behind things.
Hours are Tuesday through Friday 9:30am–5:45pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am–5:30pm, closed Mondays. The early weekday opening is unusual for a Brooklyn vintage shop and makes it a good first stop on a Carroll Gardens morning before the Smith Street stores open at noon. The F and G trains at Carroll Street put you a few minutes' walk away, and Court Street's bakeries and cafés make the surrounding blocks worth the trip on their own.
